Don’t Bogart that joint

There’s perhaps no rule more essential to weed etiquette than this simple command: “don’t Bogart that joint”.

But who do we have to thank for it? Aside from its chain-smoking namesake, Humphrey Bogart, credit is due in part to Dennis Hopper, who included the song “Don’t Bogart Me” on the Easy Rider soundtrack in 1969. That song, which gently pleads “don’t Bogart that joint, my friend,” first appeared on the self-titled album from an otherwise little-known band called the Fraternity of Man in 1968.
