It's Cancer season! Get ready for the feels

If you happen to be in certain parts of Africa, China, or South Asia at just the right time this weekend, you’ll catch a visual stunner of a solar eclipse. Over the next 24 hours, the moon is set to almost, but not quite, block out the sun, creating what’s called a ring of fire. Ominous no? Well, yes, but, also no.

That fiery ring isn’t just fun to gawk at (with the appropriate safety equipment, of course), it also marks a new moon and the return of Cancer season. Cancers are known for being emotional creatures with hard exteriors and, squishy, gooey, heart-melting insides. Fiercely protective and nurturing at the same time. You fuck with the crab, you get the claw, as they say.*

We’re taking a cue from the cosmic crustacean to look out for ourselves and the ones we love this Cancer season. Dismantling systems of oppression doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s on us as white / non-Black POC to continue to do the deep, personal work of recognizing and confronting our role in those systems. This is a time for introspection and reflection.

Dig deep, meditate, recuperate, and heal. When it’s time to exit Cancer’s protective shell, we’ll be stronger for it.

*Disclaimer: We’re not 100 percent sure who they are or that they have actually said this.
